Skilled migrants bring talent, but the challenge is bigger than just filling roles.

In a global marketplace, many organisations look to migrants to bolster their workforce. But newcomers face a lot: not just doing the job, but navigating a new culture, language, slang, systems and potentially prejudice. These can all be barriers getting in the way of them effectively supporting the industry they have come here to work in. Being able to support them to understand our system, culture, and language accelerates them into doing their job. It removes the ‘noise’ that gets in the way of them engaging in their new role. It improves their quality of life, and boosts the value they bring to the country.

Here’s how our clients have tackled this challenge:

  1.  Create a one-stop shop. What we’ve learned is for people to cope with large amounts of information, they need a one-stop shop. Make it easy to go to one place to find whatever their need is. Our client built a single portal full of links, resources, and tools. It made learning fast, easy, and accessible. No more hunting around. Just one place to go to upskill and get the information that they need. It made understanding complex information in a big world much quicker and easier to deal with.
  1. Treat it as a pre-skill. Don’t wait. Help them get comfortable with how things work before they start the technical training. Consider support pre-employment. It sets them up to thrive in both their onboarding and their role.
  1. It’s not all about technical skills. Culture is subtle, but powerful. Take the time to understanding your new team’s culture, how it aligns with your organisation’s practice and ensure team leads know what it takes to have everyone fully engaged.
