When we are working with our clients to design learning activities, there’s three key questions we need to answer.
- What’s the end game? What will learners do differently in their jobs when all is said and done?
- What do they need to understand in order to make the change?
- How do we engage and motivate them?
Engaging activities are what make learning enjoyable, and what makes learning ‘stick’. When people have had a chance to try out their ideas, they remember what they have learned later, and apply it on the job.
It’s all about motivation and feeling rewarded for effort. Making connections and getting stuff right helps learners feel the effort they’re putting in is worthwhile for them. We avoid ‘spot check’ questions that ask the learners to memorise trivia, in favor of provoking learners to think about what matters, and how to apply their learning on the job.
