From learning to capability

One of the recurring themes emerging across organisations is that capability is becoming less about access to knowledge and more about the ability to apply knowledge in context.

At the recent HR + L&D Summit, Synapsys Managing Director Phil Garing explored how AI is accelerating several shifts that were already underway across learning, development and organisational performance.

Content is no longer the primary constraint. Learning is increasingly embedded within work rather than sitting alongside it. Capability is becoming a system rather than a collection of separate initiatives, and human performance is increasingly shaped by the way people work alongside AI.

These shifts have important implications for organisations.

If capability is the outcome organisations need, then learning is only one part of the equation. Leadership, workflows, systems, culture and technology all play a role in enabling performance. As AI becomes more accessible and embedded in everyday work, organisations are being challenged to think differently about how capability is developed, supported and measured.

For learning and development professionals, this represents an opportunity to move beyond a focus on content and programmes towards a broader conversation about performance, capability and organisational effectiveness.

The presentation explores these emerging trends, the questions they raise for organisations, and what they may mean for the future of workforce capability.
